Slot Canyons and Caves in Cathedral Gorge State Park [251005-06]

( Posted 251028 ) We've been to several locations that advertised "slot canyons" in the past year and a half, but our visit to Cathedral Gorge State Park took things to a whole new level.

( Posted 251016 ) A website describes Ely by saying "In its heyday, Ely had been a bustling town with numerous small, family-owned businesses catering to families who settled in eastern Nevada to ranch, work the mines, and build the railroad. People came from everywhere."  Our attempt to explore the history of Ely didn't quite go as planned, but that sort of has been a theme of this trip.

 ( Posted 251011 ) We're not "ghost hunters", don't make a habit of visiting haunted places (quite the opposite, in fact), and didn't even know that our next stop was (potentially) haunted before going there.  It just sort of came up in casual conversation along the way.

( Posted 251010 ) Millions of children know about the Oregon Trail - thanks to the popular classic video game that had them dying of dysentery on a regular basis - but fewer know of the equally important California Trail.  We spent some time in the California Trail Interpretive Center while in Elko to learn more about it ourselves.
